Daily Trivia -
BuzzFeed App Game
With the introduction of games in the BuzzFeed app, I developed the concept of a game called Daily Trivia. By leveraging the popularity of BuzzFeed's cherished quizzes, I transformed them into a daily in-app ritual for users. With a unique trivia category assigned to each day of the week, users can now explore and challenge their knowledge in an array of subjects, including music, pop culture, food, and many others. I led design and strategy on this project and worked with our editorial teams to make the concept come to life.
The Problem
I was tasked with addressing a challenge: daily app sessions had declined by 35%, and first-time downloads were down by 33%. The goal was to boost app downloads, increase daily usage, and enhance user retention. To begin, I organized a brainstorming session involving our leadership, editors, and members of the audience development team. During the hour-long session, we explored various strategies to potentially resolve these issues.
The Design
When designing Daily Trivia, I found inspiration in the interactions found within dating apps. My aim was to cultivate an experience that is highly engaging, lighthearted, and effortless—a game that users can enjoy during their leisure time or while commuting to work everyday. Collaborating with skilled illustrators, I carefully directed the creation of the patterns, strategically employing them to provide a distinctive feel each day while maintaining a sense of unity among the overall design.
The Launch
Daily Trivia launched on August 14, 2023. I worked closely with our editorial and social teams to develop a marketing plan that would promote app downloads and game interaction across all of our platforms. Over the first week of launching the product we saw a 43% uplift in first time app downloads, as well as a 32% retention rate of users coming back to play the game in the first 7 days (higher than other games launched in 2023).
